Femeroacetabular impingement (FAI) is caused by conflict between the ball and socket joint of the hip joint. In cam morphology there is bony growth on the neck of femur/ the ball. In pincer the socket is deeper or angled slightly away from the femur. In both cases the ball and socket just don’t sit quite right, especially when the hip is flexed or rotated.
Cam morphology is common in athletes but does not always cause problems. To be diagnosed with FAI there needs to be symptoms that correlate with changes on X-ray and positive impingement tests.
For all patients physio should be encouraged for at least three months before considering surgery. This should be focused on improving range of movement and trunk and pelvic strength.
If you have hip pain physio can help. At embrace we have face to face and virtual appointments available. Our physio clinic is ideally situated for Gawcott, Steeple Claydon, Padbury, Preston Bissett, Winslow, Buckingham and Bicester. Covid safety measures are in place.
